News › Tire pressure sensors. How they work

Operation of the vehicle with reduced pressure in the wheels is a risk for the driver and for passengers. It becomes difficult for the driver to “keep” the road, that is, the handling of the car is sharply reduced. In addition, the service life of tires is significantly reduced.

In some countries (USA, European countries) the presence of tire pressure sensors is mandatory. In our country, manufacturers of premium cars also sometimes install such sensors by default.

There are several types of pressure sensors, which differ in complexity and working principle
The most simple type of – ocean sensors in the form of caps on the valve swap. Installed instead of regular caps. Equipped with a color indicator that shows approximately the level of tire pressure. Led is green means the pressure less than 2 ATM. If red, it is less than 1 ATM. This type of sensors is the most simple and budget option, but useless while driving. Nevertheless, it will allow not to make measurements manually.

Internal sensors are more complex type. A radio signal is used to transmit data. To install them, you will have to visit a specialized tire shop. The sensors are mounted directly on the wheels of the car with the help of special clamps, or as a replacement wheel valve. In addition, care must be taken to install the antenna, control unit and display panel. The control unit receives information from sensors. This data is compared with the tyre manufacturer’s parameters and, if the pressure level is below normal, a warning message is displayed and an audible alarm sounds. The degree of tire inflation can be monitored without leaving the car, even while driving. Measurement error will be about 0.01 ATM. There is a sound indication of the start of air leakage from the wheel. This is very convenient, because even an experienced driver is not always able to determine during movement that the wheel begins to descend, especially if it is not leading.

The other sensor models are varieties of the first two. For example, there are devices that support bluetooth transmission, not only to an on-Board computer, but also to a tablet or smartphone.

All sensors are equipped with built-in batteries. Most manufacturers guarantee the performance of batteries for 7-10 years. Some models are equipped with replaceable batteries.
