TPMS – (tire pressure monitoring system) tire pressure monitoring system. This system notifies the driver of increased or decreased pressure in the wheel of the vehicle. TPMS systems are mandatory for passenger transport in America and the European Union. There are different types of construction and perform different functions. For example, there are standard tire pressure monitoring systems that measure the speed of the wheel and compare the performance with the programmed data. Such measurements are considered to be indirect and unreliable.
Systems with direct measurements receive information from sensors installed individually for each wheel.
The sensors are external (wound on a valve swap wheels) and internal (installed directly in the wheel). It is worth noting that most TPMS measure not only the pressure but also the temperature of the air. In this case, the internal sensors correctly display the temperature inside the wheel, in contrast to the external sensors, which are blown by the air flow when the wheel rotates. Some sellers of tire pressure and temperature monitoring systems with external sensors prudently indicate that the sensors show temperature not in the wheel, but near the wheel, which makes little sense.
To select the pressure sensors, it is necessary to take into account the conditions under which the car will be used. Inexpensive systems with external or internal sensors, with a maximum pressure of up to 3.5 atmospheres and with an operating temperature as in the region of use are quite suitable for a car. For trucks, it is desirable to use only internal sensors, as the operation of the car takes place either in aggressive conditions, or on the road, where it is very important correct temperature data inside the wheel. For the special equipment working in pits and on building sites application of both external, and internal sensors as speed of rotation of wheels not high and blowing of the sensor by atmospheric air is insignificant is possible.
The signal from the sensors is sent to the receiver and displayed on the driver’s display. Display information from sensors can be a separate screen in the driver’s cab, a standard indicator on the dashboard, or a mobile device (smartphone, tablet, Navigator, etc.).
The use of TPMS makes the operation of the vehicle much safer and more economical.
